What a wonderful week in 2nd grade. I LOVE spending time with each student. I have already seen great academic growth and am proud of each student!!
Phonics: We will focusing on -ph digraph skill. In words like: elephant, trophy, phone, dolphin, etc. Red Words: only three words this week0 quiz will be on Thursday Little Two Going Writing: We will be looking at small moments within our lives and write stories based on these moments. I will be teaching them how to find a small moment from a memory, add a lot of detail, and to create powerful beginnings and endings. Reading: We will be focusing on grown up sneak peeks which consists of reading the back blurb and studying the table of contents to help predict the story. They will also determine what might the characters want, what might get in the way, and how the story will move from problem to solution. Grammar: We will still be reviewing writing a complete sentence with the correct punctuation. This upcoming week we will be focusing on Simple and Compound sentences.
Math 2.2 We will continue to work on adding four two digit numbers, This week we will also practice adding and subtracting 2 three digit numbers. QUIZ on Wednesday over both concepts. 3.0 We will continue practicing rounding to the tenth and hundredth place value. We will also practice adding and subtracting 2 three digit numbers. QUIZ on Wednesday over both concepts. Social Studies: For my parents that attended Curriculum night, they got a taste of our Georgia Regions! We will be having a quiz on Thursday over just the Regions and identifying the region. . On this quiz, they will have to color each region depending on the color listed. For example, Piedmont= green and so on.

This Thursday, 8/23, our school will have Curriculum night. This is an opportunity for you to visit our classroom again, learn what we do in 2nd grade, grade expectations, an overview for the year, and participate in a fun game! 5:00–5:30 ESOL and TAG Session 5:30-5:45 PTA Meeting 5:45-6:30 Session One 6:30-6:45 Break/ Parent Transition Time 6:45-7:30 Session Two Reading: We will be started BAS assessments this week. BAS is just our assessment we do to find the students reading level so we can help them grow with just right books. We will be learning how to find a just right book using the 5 finger rule. Writing: We had pre-assessment for writing on Thursday.. Our first unit will be over narrative writing. The students will focus on how our workshop works, small moment stories, details, and how to write a complete sentence. Grammar: We will be focusing on the components of writing a complete sentence. We will quickly review the different times of punctuation marks you can use in different types of sentences. Phonics: Phonics- We will be focusing on the magic e. On Monday, we will write the words in their agenda and for homework they will create 5 sentences using their phonics magic e rules. We will also be starting our red words. *Every Friday we will have a quiz on the phonics and red words. Please review these as they read their books every night!* Math We took a pre-assessment on Monday. On Tuesday we did not meet due Brain Building Day. On Wednesday and Thursday we practiced moving to math stations and each student received a small group mini lesson. On Friday we took the Fast Bridge Assessment. 2.2 standards for this unit NBT.6 NBT.7 NBT.8 NBT.9 MD. 8 MD. 10 3.1 standards for this unit NBT. 1 NBT.2 NBT.3 MD3 MD 4 Thank you for an amazing first week! I loved getting to know each student. This is a wonderful class!!!
This week we spent time going over procedures, drills, and routines. Safety is always a priority. We enjoyed playing several get to know each other activities. I read many fun picture books and had class discussions. We wrote about what we did over the summer and shared our writing. Next week, we will start our writing and reading workshop. I look forward to helping each student grow. I sent home Class Dojo login sheets yesterday so you can see how great your student is doing! Next week, every student will start a reading log in their agenda book. The goal is to read a minimum of ten minutes a night. Please log this daily in their agenda book.
